What is Wellmune?
Wellmune® is a natural ingredient that activates a large population of immune cells to defend the body against a wide range of foreign challenges. Derived from the cell walls of a proprietary strain of yeast, this unique gluco polysaccharride acts as a biological response modifier.
As the immune system evolved, it became very adept at killing yeast and fungi by recognizing certain molecules that commonly occur on the cell surface of these challenges. Wellmune is one such recognition molecule.
Wellmune binds to specific receptors (CR3) on neutrophils, the most abundant immune cell in the body, and activates or enhances its anti-microbial activity, including immune cell migration to the site of a challenge (chemotaxis) and increased killing of intruders (phagocytosis and oxidative burst).
The molecular structure of Wellmune, with its beta 1,3/1,6 branch points, is responsible for its unique biological activity. Wellmune® Enhanced Overall Wellness and Reduced Severity of Symptoms During Cold/Flu SeasonResearch Published in The Journal of Applied Research.
EAGAN, MN — August 3, 2009 — A new clinical study may offer a solution for people seeking to minimize the severity of health challenges during the cold/flu season.
According to research published recently in The Journal of Applied Research, a natural immune health ingredient called Wellmune® reduced the incidence of fever and eliminated the need for study subjects to miss work or school due to colds.
Wellmune® is clinically proven to enhance innate immune cells that are the body’s first line of defense. Derived from a proprietary strain of Baker’s yeast, Wellmune® white blood cells (neutrophils) to more quickly find and kill foreign challenges.
“The research indicates the potential of Wellmune® to naturally enhance the body’s immune system to improve overall health and wellness,” said Richard Mueller, chief executive officer of Biothera, the manufacturer of Wellmune.® “With all of the challenges we face today, strengthening your immune system with Wellmune® a great way to protect yourself.”
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted last year during the cold/flu season with 40 healthy subjects, aged 18-65. Subjects were treated daily with either Wellmune® or a placebo for 90 days. Cold/flu symptoms were evaluated by medical staff within 24 hours of onset.
While there were no significant differences in the incidence of symptomatic respiratory infections among the study groups, the duration and severity of symptoms were alleviated in subjects receiving Wellmune®.
In the study results, the Wellmune® group reported:
• No missed work or school due to colds, compared with 1.38 days of work/school missed for the placebo group. (p = 0.026)
• No incidence of fever, compared with 3.50 incidence in the placebo group. (p = 0.042)
• An increase in quality of life, including physical energy and emotional well-being, as measured by a clinically validated health survey questionnaire (SF-36v-2). (p = 0.042)
• No adverse events were detected and no safety concerns were present.
“Most of us cannot afford ‘down time,’” said Mueller. “Missing work or school, re-arranging schedules and just feeling lousy is inconvenient, to say the least. Now there is a simple, natural and safe way to support your family’s immune system.”
The study, entitled “Randomized Phase II Clinical Trials of Wellmune® for Immune Support During Cold and Flu Season,” was published in Vol. 9, No. 1 & 2 of The Journal of Applied Research. The study was conducted for Biothera by Miami Research Associates, Department of Nutrition and Endocrinology.
Research
Clinical research consistently demonstrates the ability of Wellmune® to naturally enhance human immune responses and provide protection from health challenges related to physical and lifestyle stress. Double-blind, placebo-controlled studies involving marathoners, firefighters and other individuals with stressful lifestyles found that Wellmune reduces incidence of upper respiratory tract infection symptoms and improves a sense of overall health.
These findings are not surprising based on the large body of published research demonstrating Wellmune® unique mechanism of action. Scientists understand how Wellmune works in the body at a cellular and intracellular level, making it perhaps the most researched functional ingredient in the world.
Equally important, research also documents what Wellmune® does not do: stimulate the immune system. Other immune health ingredients stress the immune system in ways that may be harmful over time. Wellmune® enhances natural immune function and is safe for daily consumption.
